The Jewish Rejection and the Messianic Acceptance of Jesus

The contradictions between Judaism and Messianic Judaism regarding Jesus:

The Jewish Rejection and the Messianic Acceptance of Jesus

The main reason why Judaism rejects Jesus as God is because it contradicts the core principle of Jewish monotheism: the oneness and indivisibility of God.

  • Judaism teaches that God is one, unique, eternal, and incorporeal.

  • God has no partners, no equals, no rivals, no sons, no daughters, no parts, no forms, no images, and no incarnations.

  • To worship anything or anyone other than God is considered idolatry, the greatest sin in Judaism.

  • Judaism also rejects Jesus as God because it contradicts the Jewish understanding of the Messiah.

Judaism expects the Messiah to be a human being, not a divine being.

  • The Messiah will be a descendant of King David who will restore the kingdom of Israel and bring peace and justice to the world.

  • The Messiah will not perform miracles or die for the sins of humanity

  • The Messiah will not be worshiped or prayed to, but will serve as God’s agent and representative.

Judaism also rejects Jesus as God because it contradicts the Jewish interpretation of the Hebrew Bible.

  • Judaism does not accept the Christian claim that Jesus fulfilled the prophecies and promises of the Hebrew Bible.

  • Judaism does not accept the Christian claim that Jesus established a new covenant that replaced or superseded the old covenant.

  • Judaism does not accept the Christian claim that Jesus is the Word or Wisdom of God who was present at creation.

  • Judaism does not accept the Christian claim that Jesus is the Son of God who shares God’s nature and essence.

Messianic Judaism, on the other hand, accepts Jesus as God because it adopts the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

Messianic Judaism believes that God is one being who exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Messianic Judaism believes that Jesus is the second person of the Trinity who became flesh and dwelt among us. Messianic Judaism believes that Jesus is fully God and fully man, who died for our sins and rose from the dead.

Messianic Judaism also accepts Jesus as God because it adopts the Christian understanding of the Messiah.

Messianic Judaism believes that Jesus is the Messiah who fulfilled all the prophecies and promises of the Hebrew Bible. Messianic Judaism believes that Jesus established a new covenant that fulfilled or completed the old covenant. Messianic Judaism believes that Jesus is the Word or Wisdom of God who was present at creation. Messianic Judaism believes that Jesus is the Son of God who shares God’s nature and essence.

Messianic Judaism also accepts Jesus as God because it adopts some elements of Jewish culture and tradition.

Messianic Judaism observes some Jewish holidays, such as Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot. Messianic Judaism uses some Hebrew terms, such as Yeshua for Jesus, Adonai for Lord, Ruach HaKodesh for Holy Spirit, etc. Messianic Judaism follows some Jewish practices, such as circumcision, kosher diet, Sabbath keeping, etc.

However, these elements do not make Messianic Judaism a form of Judaism. They are rather superficial and selective adaptations that do not change or challenge the fundamental beliefs and values of Christianity. They are rather attempts to appeal or convert Jews to Christianity by using familiar or attractive symbols and rituals.

  • Therefore, Messianic Judaism is not a form of Judaism, but a form of Christianity that incorporates some elements of Judaism and other Jewish traditions into evangelicalism.

  • It is a modernist and syncretic movement that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s from the earlier Hebrew Christian movement.

  • It is a movement that is rejected by both mainstream Judaism and mainstream Christianity as a heretical or deceptive sect.
